Hi, my name is Dr. Michael McEwan, and I am a Veterinarian at Best Pets Veterinary Hospital. I am passionate about providing high-quality care and helping my patients feel comfortable and confident in their treatment.
Personal Hobbies and Interests
Outside of work I enjoy hiking, traveling, wood working, and growing bonsai trees. My dogs Inara and Atlas, both lab and poodle crosses, join the family on every outing — especially hikes — though their favorite hobby is guarding the backyard from rabbits.
Education
I earned my Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University from 1999 to 2003, followed by a Master of Science in Organic Chemistry at Northeastern University from 2007 to 2008. I then earned my DVM at the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, graduating in 2014.
Professional Background
I am currently working toward my Fear Free certification. My background in chemistry led to several published studies, including "The Role of the Acidity of N-Heteroaryl Sulfonamides as Inhibitors of Bcl-2 Family Protein–Protein Interactions" in ACS Medicinal Chemistry Letters (2013), "1-amino-4-benzylphthalazines as orally bioavailable Smoothened antagonists with antitumor activity" in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry (2009), and "2,6-Disubstituted N-arylsulfonyl piperidines as γ-secretase inhibitors" in Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry Letters (2007). I was also awarded the Harold Wetterberg Scholarship for 2012–13 and 2013–14 and am a member of Phi Kappa Phi.
Work History
I began in veterinary medicine as an Assistant Veterinary Technician at Huron Veterinary Hospital from 2008 to 2010, assisting technicians and veterinarians with restraint, vaccinations, blood draws, and patient monitoring. In 2014 I volunteered as a Supervising Veterinarian at Tufts at Tech, a low-cost student-run clinic serving qualifying families through the Worcester Housing Authority, providing hands-on mentorship to students. I then practiced as an Associate Veterinarian at VCA Rotherwood Animal Hospital from 2014 to 2016 and at Huron Veterinary Hospital from 2016 to 2026, focusing on preventative medicine, diagnosis, and treatment, including soft tissue surgery and dentistry for dogs and cats, with a strong emphasis on client education and comprehensive medical care.
